Books by Robin Hobb
The Farseers
Assassin's Apprentice
1995,?, Bantam Spectra, 0-553-37445-1, Advance Reading Copy, paperback, ARC version of the next entry, stating the publication date of the paperback as April 17, 1995, while publication data state May 1995.
1995, May, Bantam Spectra, 0-553-37445-1, $12.95, trade paperback, cover: Michael Whelan.
1995,?, HarperCollins UK, 0-00-224606-6, Advance Reading Copy, paperback version of the next entry, with the notes 'uncorrected proof, not for sale', cover: John Howe different from the trade versions. Believed to have only 250 - 500 copies printed (source is a former editor from HarperCollins).
1995, 7 Aug, HarperCollins UK, 0-00-224606-6, ?9.99, hc., cover: John Howe. [First edition Hardcover, printrun about 2000, half of that became Library editions]
Note: the dustjacket should have ?9.99 printed. For this book I do not know of dustjackets without price, for more details see below at the UK edition of Royal Assassin.
Update July 5 2001; today I received another copy of this book, with a dustjacket (with a crease on the back alas) that has no price. this is sometimes a sign of a bookclub edition but there has been no bookclub in exactly the same format, binding, number line etc. as far as I know.
My guess now is that half of the 2000 copies could have gone to libraries without a price on the DJ. alternatively it could have been that a part of the printrun was combined with a priceless DJ for export to Australia or whatever. Another one is this explanation from Lavie Tidhar: 'one I heard from a HarperCollins publicist, was that its a proof dust jacket of some sort. hence no price.'
If you buy one take a good look at the gold lettering of Assassin's Apprentice, as that tends to get damaged

(and a whomping great monster it is, too, well over 1000 typed pages). I haven't read it myself yet, but
all indications are that it is the end of this trilogy."
Here is a small pic of the cover by Stephen Youll:

2001, reportedly there is a small sized hardcover for about 3?, sold as bruised bargain, that could be a special edition. Dave supplied these details: published by BCA 2000 by arrangement with Voyager, an imprint of Harper Collins, CN9176 [note: part of the ISBN], printed and bound in Germany by Graphischer Grossbetrieb Possneck GmbH, ISBN No. 0000000091763. Conclusion: it's a bookclub edition, showing up in shops. Normally I do not list bookclub editions because the details are difficult to get and bookclub editions are seen as not collectable.

comment: a nice story in the Bingtown area, the same stage as the Liveship Traders but completely separate.
Translated into Dutch also.

Part 2: Golden Fool

12 June 2002, HarperCollins, Page Proof, UK. It contains exactly the same error as the UK Hardback below: the missing chapter called "Fathers". This also resulted in a text page count of 599 instead of 632 (numbered pages).

Augustus 2002, (11 September in the bookshop when preordered) De Boekerij/Meulenhoff, Imprint: Uitgeverij M, ISBN: 90-225-3263-1, 24,50 €, hardback-576 p., cover: John Howe, De Gouden Nar, vertaling: Peter Cuijpers. the cover right is a mockup as the definitive cover looks like the UK version, only the fonts used for title and author are correct here

The definitive Dutch cover of 'De Gouden Nar'.
Note the different fonts for both the author and the name of the book. click image for larger version.
The Dutch Publisher kept the format the same as with Fool's Errand. (different then HarperCollins; they changed the font for the name of Robin Hobb)

21 October, 2002, New: 23 Sept. 2002 Voyager, ISBN: 0002247275, Amazon UK Price: ?17.99, Hardcover - 600 pages.
The font used for this cover shown right might be different for the real book but now confirmed to be as shown in the UK cover right.
This message from Harper Collins, picked up from Robin's official board explains all about pub. date and THE manufacturing error of the year 2002:
A chapter is indeed missing from the Australian edition of Golden Fool. As a result, all stock (in the UK and in Australia) is being recalled and pulped, all orders are being frozen. The missing chapter is being set at the printers at this very minute and will be incorporated into a revised version, making sure all the page numbers and later chapter numbers roll on. The official publication date will be moved from 7th to 21st October here and in Australia. We will have corrected bound stock in by 12th October. Our sales force and customers all over the world are being made aware of the problem. No one is supposed to have sold any stock yet (though I suspect this error must have been picked up because of an early, unofficial sales) but we are making sure everyone knows that if they have an erroneous copy, we will of course replace with a corrected one as soon as we have them.
NB. The official date to go on sale was supposed to be October 7. (This coming Monday.) The defective books slipped out in early sales.
The missing chapter is called 'Fathers' and was supposed to be chapter 16.
What does it mean for the first english editions? hardback and trade paperback? they are missing a chapter. As a rule of thumb they do not become collectors item as opposed to stamps. Curious if the next printing will have another numberline. Others may differ in opinion on this matter; this book might become an collectors item. Me myself? I don't know!
The corrected copies are getting shipped by end october. New ISBN number:0007160380, also shown on the new printed dustjacket. Numberline starts with an 1, hardcover - 632 pages (numbered).
There's obviously at least one line missing in this UK edition of GF. It's in the last Nettle scene fairly at the end of the book. On page 620, there's this passage:
"...A tiny blue bird alighted in a branch over her head and sat fanning its delicate wings.
I asked her curiously.
Her hands closed around the treasure she clasped."
Correct Quote from pages 510-511, US hardcover.:
--------------------------------------------------
... A tiny blue bird alighted in a branch over her head and sat fanning its delicate wings.
What do you have there? I asked her curiously.
Whatever I have, it is mine. Just as your secrets are yours.
Her hands closed around the treasure she clasped. She pressed it to her chest, concealing it within her heart. Had she fallen in love, then?

Taken from the Ezboard thanks to AliasPrue and Andreamlt, the Dutch first edition was complete.
WHSmith stated that they have a cheaper Hardback Published: 3 March 2003 ISBN: 0007160399, this is another ISBN number then any of the others, might be the UK Trade Paperback, checking with the Australian versions reveals that this IS the Trade Paperback.

Part 3: Fool's Fate.
Robin Hobb on her own board august 31, 2002 on this book:
I'm still deeply involved in writing the last book.
I have an outline, and how I regard that is that this tells at least one possible way to write the book. But I don't feel bound to follow it absolutely. If a better idea beckons, I follow it. Luckily, my editors are very patient with me in this regard.
I think that when writers experience writer's block, it is because they have come to a crossroad where there are too many choices. The hard part is selecting one and moving on with it. Even knowing that I can back up and delete pages and go in a different direction, it's still a momentous event when the book takes a particular path out of many.
In some ways this is the most difficult book I've ever written. I feel more as if I am cutting and shaping stone than as if I am selecting words. There is a lot to wind up here and only one book left to do it all in.
Wish me luck.
